The eldest son of Gustaf V and his wife, Victoria of Baden, he had been Crown Prince for the preceding 42 years in the reign of his father. Shortly before his death, he approved the constitutional changes which removed the Swedish monarchy's last nominal political powers. He was a lifelong amateur archeologist particularly interested in Ancient Italian cultures.
