He previously was Prime Minister of Central African Republic from January 2008 to January 2013. In the December 2015–February 2016 presidential election, he was elected to the presidency in a second round of voting against former Prime Minister Anicet Georges Dologuélé. He was reelected for a second term on 27 December 2020.
