Object description

The site of Katsuragaoka Chashi in Abashiri, Hokkaidō, Japan, is that once occupied by the Ainu fortified chashi of Katsuragaoka. Occupying an elevated site overlooking the Sea of Okhotsk, the natural changes in elevation of the two mounds upon the plateau have been added to by the excavation of moats. The site is also known as Charanke Chashi . It has been designated a national Historic Site.
